Can you tell us a little bit about your background, and how you ended up in your current role?
I began my career as a fundamental equity analyst and went back to school to acquire a PhD in finance. I spent 8 years in academics, and with two colleagues from Colorado State University started a quant hedge fund based on our academic research. My research is focused on developing machine learning models to forecast market trends. I have also developed an asset allocation technique using Artificial Intelligence to optimize portfolio selection. Currently, I am developing FinTech product for financial adviser, asset managers and individual investors that will allow them to be more equipped for left-tail market events.
What is the biggest challenge you face within your role today, and how are you looking to tackle it?
Models are only as good as the data and relevancy it produces. Today’s geo-political climate and the market’s dependency on loose monetary policy presents obstacles in forecasting high probability outcomes. As a result, new data sets have to be independent of short-term trends. Moreover, data mining outcomes need to be independent of monetary policy and short-term political influence.
Biggest success you achieved for 2018/ 2019 so far?
We have successfully converted our behavioral risk model into a FinTech product that will be available for public use sometime in early 2020.
