In episode 7 of Data Conversations Over Coffee we talk to Alex MacPhail who is a pilot and keynote speaker on leading high performing teams.
This is a slight departure away from speaking to data analytics leaders but you'll be surprised to hear how Alex uses data analytics and insights to safely navigate and control an aircraft.
I wasn't aware of this before the call but Alex used to run a coffee cart so he's got a professional machine at home to make his coffee. And he's taught his 11 year old son to make a great cup of coffee. Who in turn taught Alex's 7 year old how to make one.
During the conversation I draw parallels to the use of data analytics by a pilot and a corporate data office. And furthermore we talk about the importance of getting the right people in the right roles to develop high performing teams.
Some of they key points are:
1. AI, like an aircraft's autopilot, is highly sophisticated but it still requires a human-overlay to be truly effective and safe
2. Pilots work at near real-time when it comes to ingesting data, analysing it and make decisions based on insight
3. Surround yourself with people who play a role in helping you achieve incremental gains in achieving your goals
