Interested in technology that allow organisations to provide Data and Analytics platforms that are elastic in cost and resources like AWS, while making data available on personalised user interfaces with high performance and stability like Netflix does for movies. Fascinated in creating dynamic and innovative working environments by always trying different approaches to promote full transparency and keeping employees engaged.

In South Africa since 2009 consulting and then joined Sasol, a Chemicals and Energy Manufacturer, to transform them into a data obsessed organisation, by modernising their infrastructure for their operation and strategic transformations and now supporting their Digital Office to ensure business value is realised from their digitalisation use cases, worth ZAR 5 billion. I am a UK Citizen looking to relocate back to Europe, but also looking to utilise all my experience and skills in a Data and Solution Architecture or Business Transformation role while fulfilling my personal growth/objective to learn and then work in another language.

Manager: Data Enablement & Delivery Support, Sasol (South Africa)

Accountable to maintain and innovate services throughout their lifecycle while operating against agreed service agreements and cost levels. Responsible to deliver relevant services directly to the business in accordance to agreed service levels by teaming up with Business Partners on agreed Services per Business Group, Market Group or Function.

Monitor, measure, report and review current performance of services and components and ensure IT capacity meets business needs. Serve as point of escalation, review and approval for key issues and decisions in your domain. Establish and manage the operational relationship with suppliers to ensure the provision of specific resource / technical skills required to fix complex or severe incidents / problems and review supplier performance against defined SLAs and OLAs.

Currently part of a companywide transformation programme to “free the data” locked in federated core systems consisting of 14 ERP instances, multiple sensor data historians across the world and a number of software as services. As a strategy we decided to focus on driving Data Ownership in the businesses and modernising our data and analytics infrastructure to support the company’s operation and strategic transformation goals.

The modernisation did not only look at the best toys based on the “Big Data” wave but also placed a lot of energy on our core principles of on an elastic and resilient physical architecture, flexible licensing/costing models and avoiding vendor lock down as we could not predict the prioritisation of business use cases, adoption rate or quality of our data, we explained to our preferred System Integrators “we will start by building a tent but will have to be able to build a castle very quickly and maybe back down to a tent”. Currently our tent is Informatica, Cloudera and Teradata hosted on Microsoft Azure with a DevOps operating model to fully support an “Agile” culture and methodologies.

Chris Bannocks

Group Chief Data Officer, ING

I am a senior executive with over 20 years experience within the financial services sector. I now help organisations become data centric, assisting in transformation of architecture, culture, people and processes to deliver data quality, data governance and game changing approaches to reduce the cost of data collection, integration and lifecycle management. This delivers a clear strategy for leveraging data for greater returns.

I currently leverage these skills as the Group Chief Data Officer for ING Bank, a head office function with a federated CDO structure with 15 CDO Reports coupled with a central team.

Data is not purely a technical subject, so much of what we do is people focused. Finding the right people and associated strategies are critical to success as are the cultural aspects of how data is treated in an organisation. Data ethics and protection are key in ensuring your customers understand how their data is handled.

Speciality and focus: I want to transform the way financial services treat data and drive the sector to become truly data centric. I have a passion for data, coupled with vision to galvanise teams behind a data strategy that transforms their jobs. I like to work for ambitious organisations that want to understand strategy, and seek to avoid thinking that you cannot boil the ocean. I prefer to believe that if boiling the ocean is whats required (and sometimes it is!), we should first find a way to boil a swimming pool and progress from there, but believing its too hard and taking the easy route is not acceptable.

With a passion for business transformation, people, knowledge management and behavioural change management, I focused on business performance improvement and operating model optimisation. The outcomes of my role aimed to deliver consistent, customer relevance across all digital touch points, to empower customers through convenient and effective self-service, to drive growth through personalised digital offerings and to strengthen brand association between the organisation and digital services. Through a deeper understanding of the digital and adjacent ecosystems, I championed transformation to digital of the traditional telco model and the need for collaboration in order to see the growth of network traffic and increased revenues. I also had the opportunity to work in East and West Africa - a humbling experience.

Throughout my career in the corporate environment, I have been a facilitator, learner, knowledge sharer, coach, mentor and teacher, and can now live my dream - to share what I have learnt! It is so important that we groom young leaders as critical and innovative thinkers, curious by nature, but methodical by choice.

Chief Data Officer, Addison Lee

I left University with a degree in a bizarre subject called Actuarial Science and entered the dark world of very grey people who worked every hour god sent and did numbers for breakfast, lunch & dinner. I got into writing algorithms behind Insurance company systems for surrender values, car insurance premiums and mortgage indemnity. After 7 years of trying to finish the intolerable exams I gave up and found I could make a good living working with data and MI systems. After an Aviva takeover in 1999 I headed to the AA to finish their product warehouse off and lead the exploitation team, only for my boss to leave shortly after and leave me in charge. After a few years I was approached to set up an internal marketing analytics team and work with the central function running the warehouse. After 3 years I assumed total charge as we headed away from our parent company Centrica. After 5 changes of AA ownership and reaching Data & Insight Director I decided to leave for the role of Chief Data Officer at Addison Lee and modernize their data estate. Since joining Addison Lee I have worked on a number of projects including SCV, data governance, self-serve BI and analytics roll out, CRM improvement and moving into data science application to solve commercial problems.

Head of Business Intelligence, Openreach

How long have you been in the role?  I have been working in the Business & Corporate Delivery unit in Openreach for 3 years, but picked up my expanded Head of Business Intelligence in August 2017.  I have responsibility for Data and Analytics for my business unit, but also have specialists managing the supply and demand of engineers, our regulatory analytics for Ofcom, as well as our statistical modelling team.

How did you get in to the “data/Analytics space”.   I joined Openreach’s Business Modelling straight out of university with a degree in Mathematics and Economics, and a masters in Operational Research, so started my career in the business in one of their key analytical teams.  Since then, I’ve had a more varied career through sales, before coming back into an analytical environment.

What’s the most challenging scenario you have faced since starting the role?  The quality of our data, along with the structure and governance behind it, is a continuing challenge for my team.  It has been difficult generating consistent analytics, which is trusted by the business, given the variability in the data.  The challenge has been building trust and confidence with my stakeholders.

Jayne Russell

Group General Manager, Client Experience and Service Design, Ministry of Social Development

In September 2017 Jayne took up a new role within the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) as the Group General Manager Client Experience and Service Design.

The new business unit of Client Experience and Service Design is responsible for ensuring the voice of the client is embedded in the way we design, develop and deliver services to New Zealanders. Never satisfied with the status quo, we are always looking for more effective services and how we can deliver the right services to the right clients at the right time. To do this, we need to harness a wide range of information and evidence to determine which services and programmers work best for which clients.

Prior to this role, Jayne was the General Manager Investment Approach, a role she was in since May 2015. She has previously worked in the team as a National Manager from 2013-2014.  The then newly created Investment Approach Group became part of Work and Income (MSD’s operational Service Delivery) as part of a wider welfare reform programme. Some of the key aspects of the investment approach were the introduction of actuarial modelling to establish the lifetime costs of the welfare system (and the client segments within it), a clear investment strategy to ensure all Work and Income funding is optimally directed toward improving client outcomes and a rigorous monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of services and supports in improving client outcomes.

Before leading the Investment Approach Group, Jayne was on a 12-month secondment to the role of General Manager Employer Services. Employer Services work with industry, business leaders and major employers at a national level. We use these partnerships to minimise skill and labour shortages and maximise job opportunities for our clients. Employer Services also support our frontline regional staff in the development of local labour market solutions.
