Reveal Why

Burke Powers

Burke Powers

CEO, Reveal Why

For 20 years, I have helped companies achieve both short-term sales and long-term branding and reputation. I did this by operationalizing a holistic customer experience program and driving digital transformation, so we could understand and adapt to changing customer, market, and competitor dynamics.

In addition, I led the creation of advanced business analytics programs to help executives and senior management of SMB's and Fortune 100 companies alike to drive growth, transformation and innovation both domestically and internationally. I have led change and impact at many companies, including JetBlue Airways, IBM, PayPal, Nationwide, Macy’s, JPMorgan-Chase, DirectTV, Microsoft, Nike, and Walmart.

I believe:
• in being generous with talents and skills to help others
• that money is easy, impact is hard
• that most problems are the result of complex systems of incentives and interactions and without understanding that web, few change efforts will succeed
• that people are more important than things

RPA, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning is becoming more just buzz words within any organisation. These initiatives are becoming a reality with companies continuing to face technological, cultural and organisational challenges to their own initiatives that organisations are running. The typical approach to advancing automation across the organisation encompasses anything form complexity to meeting dynamic business needs and adopting new technology to deliver greater value to organisations. Among these hurdles the greatest challenges to:

  1. Talent and skills shortage
  2. Looking & Picking the right problems to solve using AI, Machine Learning and RPA
  3. Stakeholder and leadership buy in
  4.    Developing your Automation/Digital Strategy

Currently an experienced Head of Automation at Sanlam with a demonstrated history of working in various industries. I have a Computer Science majoring in Artificial Intelligence. Through my career thus far I have spent several times working for consulting companies involved in project delivery in the blue-chip organisations. The last 3 years I have been involved extensively in helping organisations setup their Automation Capability and currently at Sanlam with helping drive our automation journey.

Graeme McDermott

Chief Data Officer, Addison Lee

Professional Bio

Graeme left University with a degree in a bizarre subject called Actuarial Science and entered the dark world of very grey people who worked every hour god sent and did numbers for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Graeme got into writing algorithms behind Insurance company systems to automate manual calculations.

After 7 years of trying to finish the intolerable exams he gave up and found he could make a good living working with data. In 1999 Graeme headed to the AA and spent 17 years designing and building product data warehouses and SCV’s, leading the internal exploitation teams and generally becoming the data guru, or Data & Insight Director. After 5 changes of AA ownership and many data strategies Graeme decided to leave for the role of Chief Data Officer at Addison Lee and modernize their data and analytics estate. The last few years has seen Graeme write forewords for books, sit on panels and present at conferences (“My life in data” is popular), advise new comers to data how to short cut progression and complete many trade interviews.

Last Corinium Access Event Attended: Augmented Intelligence Roundtable

What were your reasons for signing up to the Roundtable?

I signed up to my first Corinium roundtable for 2 reasons. Augmented Intelligence seems more within the grasp of many companies than general AI (many are already doing narrow AI) and I wanted to hear what others were doing in this space with an external expert in the room. Plus I was attracted by the variety of attendees 95% of whom I’d never seen or heard of from other data events and data social circles

Main take away’ s for you, from the evening?

What word you put in front of “Intelligence” is only as good as the data you put into the machine. We had a balanced discussion around the sexy outputs of Augmented Intelligence whilst remaining grounded on the need for good quality data practices.

After having participated in one, what are your thoughts about the Roundtable Format?

Firstly it was a perfectly square table, which is actually pretty conducive to great conversations, in a great central location. I also met so many new and interesting people who were at various stages of trying to use Augmented Intelligence. I’m sure there was Intelligence applied to the attendees to ensure we get the right balance of industries, experience and contribution in the room.

Would you encourage your peers to attend these types of events, and why?

After the roundtable I connected to quite a few of my new data friends to continue other conversations. I think people worry they have nothing to say or are not an expert in the subject, but the events are about learning, meeting new people, sparking imagination and I’m sure you will find a contribution.

Thought Leader Contribution

What are the biggest challenges at the moment that you’re experiencing in your role?

Data Literacy and democratization…like the chicken and the egg, which comes first. I think we ventured down democratization thinking everyone was as data literate as us and the super users we usually interact with. Guess what that’s not true.

How are you currently working through those challenges?

My approach has been to identify advocates in the different functions who will adopt the democratization and be our mouth piece whilst helping those around. The company switch to office365 products has been a god send as it has allowed us to share data, information, insight more easily and consistently. The adoption of PowerBI for visualizations and dashboards (not the same in my world) has improved the democratization and literacy. We’re also recruiting with an eye on not just technical skills but softer skills to tell a story with data an communicate to a non-data audience.

What are the biggest barriers to working through those challenges?

You can create a lake of information, bring the horse to water, demonstrate how to drink and then you need to leave it to drink on its own. It you just leave it forever it may dehydrate, so you have to keep going back to check on the horse. Its not just about who is using our dashboards, but who is not and why.

How Microservices unlock enterprise-wide Innovation – from buzzword to practicality

Corinium Global Intelligence

what-is-microservices

How Microservices unlock enterprise-wide Innovation – from buzzword to practicality

Sebastian Gazi, Content Director: MEA, Corinium Global Intelligence

As the vanguards of business strategy execution; enterprise architects play an integral role in ensuring that the promise of microservice architecture is realised.

As companies have continued to embrace digitization – microservice architecture has emerged as a framework that enables customer-centric business models that not only facilitate high levels of efficiency and agility; but also unlocks new, innovative ways to realise a business’s strategic objectives.

McKinsey in collaboration with the University of Oxford conducted research that suggested that “half of all large IT projects—defined as those with initial price tags exceeding $15 million—massively blow their budgets. On average, large IT projects run 45 percent over budget and 7 percent over time, while delivering 56 percent less value than predicted. Software projects run the highest risk of cost and schedule overruns”. Moving beyond the ‘shock value’ of these figures - It would come as no surprise to IT executives; that large IT projects have the capacity to not only threaten your company’s existence, but also decimate budgets if not executed with meticulous oversight and efficiency.

This is where enterprise architects have a strategic responsibility of ensuring that technology investments align with business value. Microservice architecture has the potential to revolutionise monolythic IT systems to support stated business competencies and enable enterprise-wide innovation.

If this is something you are still grappling with, then Future Enterprise Systems Africa (FESA) is the event you have been waiting for. With a host of industry change-agitators and technology disruptors who are driving IT transformation, defining the future of work and digital business excellence speaking at FESA; you can’t afford to miss this invaluable opportunity to gain hands on experience and practical guidelines that will clarify and bring meaning to your strategies for future growth.

One of the speakers sharing their wealth of knowledge and industry insights at FESA is Johann Marx, Chief Enterprise Architect – Digital Strategy Execution and Architecture, Eskom

Johann is a catalyst for technology change. He is a dynamic, innovative and self-driven professional with diverse experience in technology, architecture, IT service delivery, agile delivery management, management and leadership.
A recognized professional within the IT Digitalisation Industry; having been at the forefront of technological advances, management and agile delivery of ICT Technology Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, IT for Engineering and Utilities, Mobility, IoT, Analytics, GIS, Enterprise Digital Transformation and Digital Innovation.
He specialises in strategy formulation and execution, fast paced agile delivery and leading teams to achieve a common goal. Johann is driven by strategic and tactical alignment of technological changes to the Enterprise, efficiency and adding value.
Some of his recent achievements include architecting, managing and leading IT competencies and pockets of excellence to deliver Digitisation, Analytics, Mobility and GIS for the Enterprise with innovative agile developments aligned to Enterprise Strategy.

Johann will deliver a keynote that aims to debunk “The Growing Need for Microservices”

Key Discussion Points Include:

  • Agile, scalable, highly responsive and efficient – why microservices are proving to be popular with EAs
  • Where to start – how to identify monoliths to disassemble
  • More pieces to the puzzle – taking a lean approach to microservice management
  • Integration is key; where corporates and start-ups can work together

If you want to take advantage of disruptive technologies for innovation, then this is your opportunity to network, engage and gain hands-on experience from a diverse set of speakers sharing their wealth of knowledge and industry insights at FESA.

With more than 30 Enterprise Architecture and Business Transformation industry experts, and over 20 hours of instructive content over three days, you cannot afford to miss the most content-rich enterprise architecture event in the country.

Future Enterprise Systems Africa is hosted at Focus Rooms, Sunninghill, Johannesburg from 15 to 17 October 2019.

I'm currently working towards completing my Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration to compliment my architecture and technology skills and experience with business and leadership competencies and toolsets.

*Conducting a CX Lab tour for senior executives and change agents, showcasing fit for purpose technology in the context of curated customer and employee journeys with the use of compelling storytelling.
*Providing technical leadership to a geographical-diverse software development team (primarily in the Phillipines);
*Establishing mainstream adoption of capability-based planning at an executive level;
*Delivering on a multi-year clothing design and manufacturing supply chain ERP system replacement
*Realising a vision to successfully demonstrate open innovation in an impactful way, while doing good in the community through a DevFest/Hackathon with Quirky30 NPC;
*Leveraging my connections to identify inspiring speakers and partners for our annual Innovation Day.
*Advising and supporting project teams software procurement processes to make complex product decisions
*Evangelising and influencing innovative practices at executive level
*Delivering a (mvp) operations management system for clothing manufacturing production lines under tight time and budget constraints using agile delivery practices – managed the team and designed the solution to delivery required strategic capabilities
*Developing and embedding Integrated Architecture Plans into our long range strategic investment planning processes in pursuit of a more mature Enterprise Architecture.

Group General Manager, Client Experience and Service Design, Ministry of Social Development

In September 2017 Jayne took up a new role within the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) as the Group General Manager Client Experience and Service Design.

The new business unit of Client Experience and Service Design is responsible for ensuring the voice of the client is embedded in the way we design, develop and deliver services to New Zealanders. Never satisfied with the status quo, we are always looking for more effective services and how we can deliver the right services to the right clients at the right time. To do this, we need to harness a wide range of information and evidence to determine which services and programmers work best for which clients.

Prior to this role, Jayne was the General Manager Investment Approach, a role she was in since May 2015. She has previously worked in the team as a National Manager from 2013-2014.  The then newly created Investment Approach Group became part of Work and Income (MSD’s operational Service Delivery) as part of a wider welfare reform programme. Some of the key aspects of the investment approach were the introduction of actuarial modelling to establish the lifetime costs of the welfare system (and the client segments within it), a clear investment strategy to ensure all Work and Income funding is optimally directed toward improving client outcomes and a rigorous monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of services and supports in improving client outcomes.

Before leading the Investment Approach Group, Jayne was on a 12-month secondment to the role of General Manager Employer Services. Employer Services work with industry, business leaders and major employers at a national level. We use these partnerships to minimise skill and labour shortages and maximise job opportunities for our clients. Employer Services also support our frontline regional staff in the development of local labour market solutions.
