Interview with Duke University Health System CHIO Eric Poon

Eric Poon, Chief Health Information Officer at Duke University Health System, outlines how the hospital is developing innovative ways to improve health outcomes with electronic health record data.

“It has been a very exciting 12 months,” he says. “I think the healthcare industry in general has really seen the possibilities of machine learning and predictive modeling in how we can rethink our approach to patient care.”

“The types of tools that have become available really has opened up the possibilities significantly,” he adds. “We are going beyond the traditional regression models to much more advanced machine learning methods, such as deep learning for imaging data.”

  • Eric Poon became Duke University Health System’s Chief Health Information Officer in 2014. He was previously Chief Medical and Information Officer at Boston Medical Center. There, he helped to implement the center’s electronic health record system.
